Amazing Bonfire is biggest on record

RYE’S bonfire celebrations were a blazing success on Saturday with huge crowds and the longest procession on record.

A damp evening failed to deter revellers as thousands took to the streets to watch the procession of burning torches, drumming bands and stunning set pieces.

Once again Rye’s fire breathing green dragon and burning boat delighted the crowds.

Bonfire societies came from all over Sussex to take part in the traditional event but there was plenty of local representation with Peasmarsh Girl Guides having a float and the Rye College samba band joining the procession.

Societies taking part included those from Lewes, Battle, Staplecross, Robertsbridge and Hastings.

The procession set off from Tilling Green, winding its way through the town to the Salts where a giant bonfire blazed and a spectacular fireworks display took place.

Heavy rain held off until after the fireworks had finished.

The honour of lighting the giant bonfire this year went to 12 year old Alisha Wicking , from Rye, who was chaired down to the fire site by Roman Centurians from Robertsbridge.
