Family Mediation Week takes place next week (January 16-20) with the aim of raising awareness of the benefits of family mediation. It’s all about getting couples who are separating to take control and build a positive future for their family.

Linda Lamb from Eastbourne-based LSL Family Law said: “Mediation can make the difference at any point when a family decide to end their relationship and when lawyers reach the point where they can’t get any further. It can improve communication between the couple, which is incredibly important, especially if they have young children.”

Ms Lamb said mediation tends to be ‘significantly cheaper’ than going to court and can be adapted to fit the needs of the couple. She said: “The couple can determine the speed at which the process happens. Quite often, one half of the couple is further ahead emotionally than the other and mediation sessions can be staggered to create space for the other to catch up.”

Ms Lamb said if you go to court, your personal choices are taken away. She said: “The mediation process is designed to enable couples to work together and make decisions which will benefit the whole family. Mediation also provides a forum for parents to discuss child arrangements as their children develop. If the separation occurs when their children are young, there will be many changes before they hit the teenage years.”

LSL Family Law wants people to know ‘there can be a way to protect your changing family from animosity and create a much safer and positive experience for everyone involved’ and that is through mediation.
